L5: Memory 1 Flashcards
types of sensory memory
sensory memory - retention of effects of sensory stimulation for a brief period of time
persistence of vision - retention of the perception of light e.g. trail of light in a moving sparkler
modal model of memory
control processes: active processes that can be controlled by the person
strategies used to make a stimulus more memorable
capacity of sensory memory
sperling attempted measuring capacity and duration of sensory memory
- presented array of letters flashing on screen
- ppts asked to report as many as possible
variations of sperlings experiment
whole report method - ppts asked to report as many as could be seen (4.5 out of 12)
partial report method - ppts heard tone that told them which row of letters to report (3.3 out of 4)
delayed partial report method - presentation of tone delayed for a fraction of a second after the letters were extinguished (1 out of 4 letters)
two components of phonological loop
phonological store - verbal and auditory store
articulary process - rehearsa; to keep info from decaying
Capacity of WM
Affected by interference:
- phonological similarity effect: words that sound similar are confused
- articulatory suppression: speaking prevents rehearsing items
- word length effect: short words easier than long
role of prefrontal cortex
processing incoming visual and auditory information
what is the delayed response task
In such tasks, one presents a bit of information (a sample) to a subject, withdraws that information, waits for a period of time (recall delay), then presents that same bit of information along with a comparison bit and asks the subject to identify (choose) which bit of information was presented previously.
patient kf
damaged parietal lobe
impaired stm but functional ltm
able to form and hold new memories
