5
Q

When could you palpate submental/submandibular lymph nodes?

A

Ulcers in mouth/gum/lip, as the nodes enlarge secondary to inflammation of those tissues

Q

What are the names of the deep lymph nodes?

A
  1. Jugulo-digastric (as found near posterior belly of digastric muscle, and near IJV, behind the mandible: drains palatine tonsil, oral cavity, tongue)
  2. Jugulo-omohyoid (drains oral cavity, posterior tongue, aerodigestive tract, thyroid gland)
  3. Supraclavicular (near base of posterior triangle, drain parts of the thorax and abdomen)

9
Q

Why would deep lymph nodes be enlarged?

A

-from fluid from the superficial nodes
OR
-directly from structures within the neck e.g. thyroid/posterior tongue, as these drain directly into the deep nodes

Q

What is Waldeyer’s Ring?

A
An annular (ring shaped) collection of lymphoid tissue which surrounds the upper digestive tract
-first line of defence against certain pathogens entering the body

16
Q

What is the common name for the pharyngeal tonsil?

A

Adenoids

17
Q

What is the issue with enlarged adenoids (often occurs in children)?

A

Nasal obstruction

They are in close proximity to the eustachian tube, which connects middle ear to nasopharynx= middle ear complications

18
Q

Why may all the tonsils enlarge?

A

If you inhale toxins/pathogens that stimulate an immune response/reaction
