L4A- Restraint N Venipuncture Review Flashcards
“Holding off” a vein proximal to the venous site. The vein is blocked so that blood cannot travel back to the heart
Occlusion, to occlude
The raising of a vein that occurs when it fills with blood.
Distention
To fill a vein with blood by occluding it is to ______ it
Distend
A swelling that contains blood that has leaked from vessels. Can occur as a result of injury or venipuncture
Hematoma
Use this vein for larger amounts of blood from small dogs or cats
Jugular
Use any of these veins for indwelling IV catheters in both cats and dogs
Jugular, cephalic, lateral saphenous
Used for collection of large volumes of blood in larger dogs, smaller volumes in most dogs and adult cats
Cephalic
Used for blood collection and injection in cats only
Femoral and medial saphenous
These veins should not be used for indwelling catheters due to risk of dislodging catheter
Femoral and medial saphenous
Used for blood collection and injections in dogs
But can be used for indwelling IV catheters on cats and dogs
Lateral saphenous
Use alcohol to wipe venipuncture area in direction of beaut growth. This does what
Flatten down hair, stimulate blood flow (helps raise vein)
If a vein doesn’t distend after using alcohol, you can do what
Pump the paw if you are drawing from an extremity
Lightly slap or flick area where vein located
Vein on medial aspect of calf
Lateral?
Medial saphenous
Lateral saphenous
How to prevent hematomas when doing a venipuncture
Place pressure on needle while removing it and after it is removed
When to have retrainer let up pressure when drawing blood
After you’ve draw up amount needed, before removing needle.
