What are the drugs that cause the urine to be acidified?
A
- Calcium Chloride (cranberry juice)
- Ammonium Chloride
- Arginine-hydrochloride
- Lysine-dihydrochloride

What are their indications?
A
- Increase the excretion of certain acidic drugs that cause toxicity like amphetamine, ephedrine, methadone, quinine, phencyclidine
- To prevent calcium-phosphate renal stone formation
- Increase the efficacy of certain drugs like penicillins, tetracyclines, Nitrofurantoin, clindamycin and lincomycin.
- To test for renal tubular acidosis
- To promote antimicrobial action of methamine, at pH lower than 5.5, methenamine releases formaldehyde which has antibacterial activity.
