What are diuretics?

Diuretics are medications that increase salt and water excretion in urine and they can be divided into two types:

A. Saluretics: primarily excrete salts; carbonic-anhydrase inhibitors, loop, thiazide and potassium sparing diuretics.
B. Aquaretics: primarily excrete water; osmotic diuretics, vasopressin, ethanol, demeclocycline and lithium
