2
Q

what is the critical role of psychophysics?

A

establishes the limits of the sensory system e.g., smallest detectable change is colour, brightness etc.

Q

What was the task in Posner’s (1980) study?

A

Ppts are asked to fixate on a central point on a screen.

A cue is presented - central (arrow pointing in a direction) or peripheral (brief brightening of an area on the screen).

After a short delay, a target appears in the location indicated by the cue (valid cue) or in a different location (invalid cue)

7
Q

What’s a valid cue?

9
Q

What were the findings of Posner’s (1980) study?

A

response times are faster when the cues are valid

visual attention spotlights illuminating regions of interest

Q

What is the function of both types of covert attention?

16
Q

what are fixations?

A

eye stays relatively still with small movements (tremor, drift, micro saccades)

17
Q

What’s overt attention?

A

located at eye fixation with high visual resolution

18
Q

what’s covert attention?

A

the mental focus on a particular part of the visual field without moving the eyes towards that direction

19
Q

what’s overt attention?

A

directing eyes (+ often head) towards a location or object of interest
