L32- Hypothalamic and Pituitary Hormones (adrenocorticotrophs) Flashcards
1
Q
ACTH analogs
A
corticotropin
cosyntropin
2
Q
why do ACTH analogs have limited utility as therapeutic agents
A
less predictable and less convenient than corticosteroid therapy
3
Q
ACTH and its analogs act on (1) receptor, a (2) type of receptor on (3) cells. (4) is the cellular change induced, and (5) is the overall change and goal of ACTH.
A
1- MC2R 2- Gs 3- adrenal cortex 4- inc cAMP 5- secrete glucocorticoids, androgen precursors + little mineralocorticoids
4
Q
ACTH analogs:
- Dx use
- Tx use
A
Dx: differentiating Addison’s disease / primary adrenal insufficiency and inadequate ACTH secretion / secondary adrenal insufficiency
Tx: infantile spasm (West Syndrome- seizure disorder possibly due to CRH)
5
Q
ACTH analogs AEs are similar to…..
A
glucocorticoids: immuno-suppression is main concern
