What are the 3 main reasons why consumption of food has increased?
- Population increase
- Wealth increased: higher standards of living
- Better transport & storage (fridges, preservatives, chemicals) & technology
Malnutrition
A serious condition that happens when your diet does not contain enough calories
Food security
The state of having reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food
Food security index
Food security is measured using this. It is calculated by looking at the level of food stocks in a country, the level of nutrition and political stability
Undernutrition
This is caused by having a poorly balanced diet which lacks essential vitamins and minerals
Calorific value
The energy contained in food
Food insecurity
The condition of not having access to sufficient food, or food of an adequate quality, to meet one’s basic needs
