Yakima Valley AVA and Walla Walla AVA are the most important
Columbia Valley AVA lies in the rain shadow of the cascade mountains, meaning irrigation is a necessity

Winter freeze is a major problem in the area.

Most important varietals on Columbia Valley AVA:

What is the most important wine growing region in New York and why?
What varietals are grown?
The Finger Lakes AVA is the most important wine growing region due to deep glacial lakes which store heat well into November and raise the air temperature of the surrounding vineyards to extend the growing season.
Most well known for perfumed Rieslings, but also quality Pinot Noir, Cab Franc and Chardonnay
