What types of issues are typical for the Loire Valley?

A

The vineyards lie on the northern limit of production for the grapes grown. This means that there can be very different results in quality from year to year, depending on the weather.

Fungal diseases because of the high level of rainfall is common

Q

Describe Sauvignon Blancs from Sancerre and Pouilly Fume.

A

Both tend to be:

-Dry
-High acid
-Green apple and wet stone flavors
-Subtle smoky notes (for Pouilly Fume)
-Most wines are intended to be drunk young and not suitable for aging, however, wines from the villages of Chavignol and Monts Damnes (both from Sancerre) can be more expressive and evolve in bottle

Both regions have well drained, stony, limestone based soils.

Q

Describe characteristics of Chenin Blanc in the Loire Valley?

A

Responsible for the best wines in the Touraine and Anjou-Saumur regions.

Chenin Blanc is:
-high acid
-non-aromatic
-Uniquely, grapes develop & ripen at different levels
-if not managed properly, can lead to green and herbaceous aromas in the wine (if unripe grapes aren’t excluded in the harvest)
-Can be made in a variety of styles: dry or sweet, still or sparkling

  • Sparkling -typically made from barely ripe fruit that only achieves 10-11% alc as a still wine

-Dry, medium and sweet wines will be made from more ripe grapes, including those that have sun-shriveled or developed noble rot

Q

Describe the different styles of Chenin Blanc

A
  • Young wines:
Can develop flavors of fresh apple to tropical fruit depending on grape ripeness

Dry styles- steely, smoky character

Sweet wines - apricot and citrus flavors of noble rot

-both dry and sweet can age for decades becoming richer, rounder, and developing notes of honey, toast and hay in bottle which balance well due to the high acid in the wines

Q

Describe Chenin Blanc from the Vouvray appellation .

A

Vouvray (located in Touraine) is a cool climate appellation located to the east of the city of Tours.

-high acid
-fresh fruity and floral notes
-rarely matured or fermented in new oak

Q

What types of Chenin Blanc wines come from Savennieres?

A

This region is located west of Anjou-Saumur.

The climate is relatively warm and dry leading to wines that are:

-medium to full body
-less floral

Savennieres produces dry, full-bodied late harvest wines (there is better air cirulcation in these vineyards impeding noble rot) which allows for complex wines.

Q

Describe Muscadet (aka Melon Blanc of Melon de Bourgogne) from the Loire Valley.

A

-Early ripening and frost resistant so suitable to a cool climate
-Muscadet is the broadest appellation but many others with Muscadet in the name

-Wines characteristics generally are:
-dry
-medium alcohol
-high acid
-light body
-subtle green fruit flavors
-should be drunk young
-traditionally aged in large old oak, but now most winemakers use either concrete or stainless steel vessels

17
Q

What is Muscadet (Sevre et Maine) Sur Lie?

A

This is the most highly regarded Muscadet in the region.

It is a speciality which is bottled the year after the vintage having spent the winter on the lees (sur lie)

This gives the wine a richer texture -handled delicately and very little to retain freshness.

18
Q

Describe Cabernet Franc from Bourgueil and Chinon.

A

Both appellations are in Touraine Bourgueil (in the north) and Chinon (in the south)

In sandy soils in these regions, wines tend to be:

-light
-fruity
-early drinking

Whereas on southfacing slopes with limestone and clay soils, wines tend to be:

-fuller bodied
-more tannic

(the best wines are aged in oak and can evolve for many years)

19
Q

Describe Cabernet Franc from Saumur-Champigny

A

-lighter body style
-best served chill
-can have a floral or violet character

Some producers make fuller bodied, tannic styles suitable for aging

20
Q

What other red variety is common in the Loire Valley?

A

Gamay -the second most planted variety - in the Touraine and Anjou regions

usually makes fruity, early drinking wines

a small amount of pinot noir is grown in the central vineyards

but best sites are typically reserved for sauvignon blanc
