L3: labour process Flashcards
Name the 5 p’s affecting labour
- passenger (fetus and placenta)
- passageway (birth canal)
- Powers (contractions)
- Position of mother
- psychological respons
What is the best and worst fetal presentation
We prefer cephalic, complete flexion, OA. The smallest part of the head would be entering first and the rest would fall through.
Shoulder presentation and single footling breech are not compatible with vag birth. We don’t like the other breech’s either
What is fetal lie
The long axis of the fetal’s spine in relation to the mother’s. There are 3 types:
- longitudinal
- transverse
- oblique
What are the important head measurements for the fetus during birth
biparietal diameter
suboccipitobregmatic diameter.
T or F: We prefer LOP, OP, ROP
F: we like OAs more because the fetal presentation is more ideal
Use of peanut balls
they can help rotate babies facing direction. i.e. OP to OA
What part of the fetus’ head do we want coming out first
the occiput
Describe fetal station
range from -3 to +3. The cm of where the baby is in relation to the base of the ischial spine. once the baby is at 0, it is at the spine and it is engaged. Mom starts pushing at +2
What are the factors of the passenger in relation to delivery
- fetal presentation: What part comes out first. Cephalic, breech, or shoulder
- Head measurement: biparietal (largest transverse) and suboccipitobregmatic (smaller diagonal)
- Fetal attitude: relation of fetal’s body part to one another
- Fetal position: station (vertex in relation to the maternal ischial spine) and engagement
