L3 - Develop Resh Qn and Study Plan Flashcards
Purpose of FINER criteria
Develop good resh qn
Describe the FINER criteria
- Feasible (e.g. scope, sufficient sample, etc.)
- Interesting
- Novel (≠ original)
- Ethical
- Relevant (to the world)
Purpose of PICOT
Help to FRAME research qn
Describe the PICOT approach. What type of research does it apply to?
- Ppn
- Intervention
- Controls
- Outcome
- Timeframe (optional)
Type of resh: Comparative or Quantitative resh (more numbers stuff)
(Qualitative no need PICOT, just PO. Not all resh qn need PICOT)
Using the PICOT to formulate a research question using the following details:
Study was conducted during flu season, on patients ≥65yo, to see how effective influenza vaccine is in minimising the risk of developing pneumonia
For (P) patients 65yo and older, how does (I) the use of an influenza vaccine compared with (C) not receiving the vaccine influence the risk of (O) developing pneumonia (T) during flu season?
How does Resh qn lead to study objectives?
Resh qn –> Hyp –> Study Objectives
- Hyp is a speculative statement answering resh qn
- Study objective is the aims of research, consisting of pri and sec objectives
Construct a Hyp and study objectives from the following research question:
How does low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) administered for 12 weeks compare with a placebo device in managing knee pain of individuals with patellar tendinopathy?
- Hyp: Pain levels are reduced in individuals who receive daily active-LIPUS (treatment) for 12 weeks compared with individuals who receive inactive-LIPUS (placebo).
- Study Objective: To investigate the clinical efficacy of LIPUS in the
management of patellar tendinopathy symptoms.
What are the components of a study plan?
- Resh qn
- Background and significance (why qn impt?)
- Design (approach + time frame?)
- Subjects: Sampling strategy, I/E criteria
- Variables (Cf, predictor, O)
- Stats issue
(It’s like an abstract of the study, except you don’t have results yet)
