L1 - Intro Flashcards
1
Q
Define research
A
A systematic investigation to develop/contribute to generalisable knowledge to extend beyond what is already known
2
Q
What is the Scientific Method and what are its steps?
A
Form and test Hypothesis, aka Hypothetico-deductive method
Steps:
- Make observations
- Think of interesting question
- Formulate Hypothesis
- Develop Testable prediction
- Get data to test predictions
- Refine hypothesis (repeat 4-6)
- Develop general theories
3
Q
List and briefly describe the stages in the research process
A
- Formulate Resh qn
- Plan the conduct of study
- Make data collection instrument
- Select sample, large enough to control random error and representative of ppn
- Write proposal
- Collect Data
- Process and display data (quantitative and qualitative)
- Research Report
4
Q
Why is the design of research impt?
A
To get valid findings that answers resh qn
5
Q
Describe the two types of validities
A
- Internal validity: Findings actually lead to correct inferences about whatever happening in the STUDY
- External validity: i.e. generalisability (whatever happen IN THE WORLD)
6
Q
The two errors that can affect validity, and possible ways to overcome them
A
- Random error: happens due to chance
- Affect precision
- Overcome with large enough sample - Systematic error due to bias
- Affect accuracy
- Overcome with proper design and
7
Q
Outline the steps in selecting the sample
A
- Determine target ppn, well-suited to resh qn
- Determine accessible ppn representative of target ppn and available
- Sampling: Use a way to get accessible ppn which are easy to study
8
Q
The four important values for responsible conduct of research
A
Abbrieviation: A Hoe
- Accuracy (avoiding errors)
- Honesty (no fabrication)
- Objectivity (let facts speak)
- Efficiency (resource usage)
