What is cellulitis?
An infection of the deeper layers of the dermis
Can be purulent or non-purulent
Can progress into deeper tissues to the point where it may even affect bone
What pathogens can cause cellulitis?
Gram positive cocci
Which pathogens tend to cause non-purulent cellulitis?
Beta hemolytic streptococci especially group A streptococci (e.g. S pyogenes)
What pathogen tends to cause purulent cellulitis (abscesses)
Staph aureus including MRSA
What is an abscess?
Features of cellulitis + a focal collection of pus within the subcutaneous tissue
How does erythema manifest in dark skinned individuals?
The erythema may manifest as darkened or even black discoloration
What are the key clinical considerations in sepsis?
Organ dysfunction and dysregulation
What are some DDx for cellulitis?
DVT, necrotizing fasciitis, erysipelas, venous stasis, contact dermatitis, underlying osteomyelitis
