L3 Flashcards
shape of drug concentration agoist response curve
rectangular hyperbola
shape of log drug concentration against response curve
symmetrical sigmoidal
what concentration - response curve do we use more
log concentration curve
what is an in vitro experiment
drug effects are studied on a piece of tissue dissected from an animal and kept alive outside of the body. it is the most common type of experiment.
what are in vivo experiments
drug effects studied in the animal (or human). for example clinical trials. regulated by the home office.
what are ex vivo experiments
a tissue or organ is removed from an animal that has been treated with a drug, and the effects the drug has had are tested in vitro. regulated by home office.
what range of concentration do drugs act in
1x10^-6M to 1x10^-12M
what is a cumulative concentration response curve
we don’t wash off the drug
why can’t we use drug volumes in vivo
the volume of the solvent (blood) is not known.
how are drug doses in vivo expressed
weight of drug per weight of animal
what is the Emax in a (log) concentration-response curve
the maximum effect
what is the EC50 in a (log) concentration-response curve
molar concentration of a drug that produces 50% of the maximum response for that drug
what is potency
describes the concentration at which a drug is most effective. a potent drug is effective in very small amounts.
what is the potency ratio (M)
M = EC50(test)/EC50(standard)
or logEC50(test) - logEC50(standard)
what is a bioassay
measuring the presence of something by looking at a biological response
