- Inconsistent histories can make the diagnosis of child abuse

Why is abdominal bruising of particular concern for pediatric cases?
A
- Bruising in absence of history of significant trauma is high suspicious of occult abdominal trauma, which is second most common reason children die from inflicted injury.

Describe toddler bruising. Why is this important in assessing for child abuse?
A
- Aka exploratory bruising, typical and normal result of toddlers moving about, crawling etc. - Those that don’t cruise, rarely bruise. - If you don’t have child who is active or has ability, then no bruising should occur – if it does, then investigate

Examples of important questions to ask when taking a physical for a child with injury / trauma.
A
- What was the child wearing? - What happened after the injury? - Who else was there?

- absolutely not - 95% of sexually abused children with have normal genital examinations by time they are seen
