Difference between sexual abuse and sexual exploitation?

A
  • Sexual abuse: incest, indecent exposure, sexual exploitation by counselor or therapist, invasion of privacy, nudity - Sexual exploitation: consensual or unconsensual sexual conduct: kissing, touching clothed or unclothed, transmission display or taking electronic images of unclothed breast/genitals

Physician’s responsibility when dependent adult abuse or neglect is suspected.

A
  • Mandated to report to DHS if we suspect dependent adult has possibly/probably suffered abuse or neglect as a result of acts/omissions of responsible caretaker. - If abuse in nursing home or hospital, call DIA - Provide follow up with written report within 48 hours

Common risk factors associated with dependent adult abuse and neglect

A
  • female, unmarried, non-white = highest risk - elder residing with child or vice versa - caregiver with history of substance abuse, mental illness and / or violence - elders with poor health and low income - elders with short-term memory problems, psychiatric diagnoses and / or alcohol problems - external caregiver stressors – missing work, financial stress, life style changes
