L2 - Order or Chaos Flashcards
What is the area called containing the high rise buildings in London?
CBD (Central Business District)
What feature of Londons structure makes the oldest part of London accessible from all parts of London?
London’s radial roads
What does better accessibility lead to?
Higher land values, especially where roads intersect
What is the positive and negative regarding environmental quality in Central London
Despite its density, large parks improve environmental quality, however due to large amounts of traffic it has the worst air quality in the UK
What did the inner suburbs mainly consist of?
During the Industrial Revolution in the 18th and 19th century there were mainly factories and densely packed terraced housing.
What process led to poor quality and run down areas?
Deindustrialisation
What was the main building types in the inner city and how did this effect environmental quality?
There are mainly dense residential zones and factories, which resulted in a lack of parks and open spaces.
What process is now occurring in areas such as Hackney due to external investment?
Gentrification and redevelopment
Why are the inner suburbs the most varied part of London?
This is because they consist of high income suburbs such as Kensington as well as poor quality areas with old factories such as Tower Hamlets and Hackney
What are the suburbs?
They are an extension of the inner zone and occupy the largest area inside the M25.
Why were many private estates built in the suburbs?
To counter housing shortages
What resulted in these areas having a lower building density?
Large open spaces and mainly semi detached homes mostly containing gardens.
What is a positive environmental factor about the urban rural fringe?
All houses having large gardens and being mainly detached as well as large green spaces result in there being a lower building density and better air quality.
What factors show that the urban rural fringe is mainly in the interest of better services for people residing in and around it?
There is little industry and mainly residential zones with large shopping complexes, large open park/recreational spaces and extensions of transport infrastructure for better accessibility to central London.
What are the main points that show that London has no set pattern or structure?
London now consists or multiple CBDs such as Canary Wharf. Areas of degradation and redevelopment are spread out across London.
