L2-Joints Flashcards
what are the 2 main types of joints and define them?
a) synovial joints in which skeletal components are separated by a cavity
b)solid joints in which there is no cavity and skeletal components are linked by connective tissue or cartilage
which type of joint has more restricted movement?
solid joints
what are the 2 main types solid joints divide into?
fibrous joints
cartilaginous joints
fibrous joints include
sutures
gomphoses
syndesmoses
what are sutures?
its a type of solid fibrous joints occurring only in the skull where adjacent bones are linked by a thin layer of connective tissue. bones have serrated edges
what are gomphoses
its a type of solid fibrous joints occuring in teeth and adjacent bones to this joint
what are syndesmoses?
its a type of solid fibrous joint where 2 adjacent bones are linked by ligament
example ligamentum flavum
cartilaginous joints include
synchondroses
symphysis
what is synchondroses?
it is primary cartilaginous which is present at the end of long bones. occurs when 2 ossification centers of a long developing bones remain separated by cartilage
example growth plate that occurs between head and shaft of long developing bones allows bone to grow and eventually become completely ossified. no movement allowed
what is symphsis?
it is secondary cartilaginous that allows limited movement where 2 separate bones are interconnected by fibrocartilage. this type of joint mainly occurs at the midline
give 2 types of symphsis joints
a) pelvis symphsis: between the 2 pelvic bones
b) intervertebral disc
describe the synovial membrane
covers all the intracapsular structures except for the articular surfaces and encloses the articular cavity. its highly vascularized and produces synovial fluid which fills the articular cavity and provides lubrication for articulating surfaces
