What is a knight?
A warrior who fought on horseback.
What is a fief?
A parcel of land
What is a Lord?
A noble who gives a fief to a knight in exchange for protection.
What is a vassal?
A knight who promised to support his Lord in exchange for land.
What is Feudalism?
The system of promises that governed the relationship between Lord and vassal.
What are some of the Lord’s duties?
- Had to send help to vassals if an enemy attacked.
-Had to be fair toward his vassals.
-Couldn’t cheat or punish vassals for no reason.
If a Lord failed to do what he was supposed to, the vassal could break all ties with the Lord.
What are some of the vassal’s duties?
-Fought with his Lord.
-Had to give money to Lord on special occasions.
-Had to give Lord food and shelter if Lord came to visit
If a vassal gets enough land, he can become a Lord. Vassals can be vassals to multiple Lord’s.
Who were the Normans?
A group of Vikings that invaded northern France and stayed
-They formed the kingdom of Normandy
Who was William?
-The Duke of Normandy.
-Fought in the Battle of Hastings for the throne and won, so he became king.
-Known as William the Conqueror.
How did William the conqueror change England?
-Gave land to his knights.
-French words entered the British vocabulary.
-Created Domesday book.
What is the Domesday book?
A survey of the land to figure out what taxes he could collect.
What is a manor?
A large estate owned by the knight or Lord.
What is a serf?
Workers who were tied to the land on which they live.
