Most people in Europe live pretty close to what? How did that impact them?
Most people in Europe live close to rivers, seas, or peninsulas. This allows access to drinking water, transportation, agriculture, and food.
Why is Northern Europe so much warmer than it should be?
The North Atlantic Drift brings warm water and air up from the Atlantic, warming the area in the process.
What is the environment like in Southern Europe? (3)
- Peninsulas, making them great sea traders.
- Dry environment so they grew things like grapes and olives because they could survive the conditions.
- Mountainous region so they raised sheep and goats.
What is the environment like in Northern Europe? (2)
- Far from the seas, but contains many rivers.
- Many flat plains so invasions are common.
What is a missionary?
Christians sent by the Pope to convert people in new lands in the Northern Empire.
Who was Patrick?
A missionary who took it upon himself to convert those in Ireland. He later became a saint.
What is a monk?
A religious man who lived apart from society in an isolated community.
Where did monks live?
Monasteries.
Who was Benedict?
An Italian monk who made the Benedictine Code.
What was the Benedictine Code?
A set of rules that many European monasteries used.
What did monks do for the community?
- Ran schools.
- Gave free healthcare.
- Copied books for those who couldn’t read/write.
- Collected & saved ancient writings from Greece & Rome.
- Served as scribes & advisors to local rulers.
Who were the Franks?
A powerful group of Germanic tribes.
Who was Charlemagne?
The leader of the Franks that conquered all of Gaul, spread his empire to Rome, and was crowned Emperor of the Romans by Pope Leo III.
Who was Pope Leo III?
The Pope who crowned Charlemagne Emperor of the Romans.
What was special about the crowning of Charlemagne by Pope Leo III?
The crowning was on Christmas day.
The crowning eventually led to political dilemmas.
Which 3 groups invaded Europe during the early Middle Ages?
- Muslims- invaded southern France & northern Italy.
- Magyars- invaded the Eastern side, attacked towns & fields.
