What do Herpes simplex viruses 1 and 2 cause?
HSV1- Cold sores (upper body)
HSV2- genital herpes (lower body)
What does the varicella-zoster viruse VZV cause?
chickenpox and shingles
What happens with HSV1 and HSV2 after primary infection?
Replicate in epithelial cells. Then enter sensory neurones and travel down tot he dorsal root ganglion and become latent until reactivated.
What do you treat HSV2 with?
Acyclovir (ACV)- blocks DNA synthesis
Where do VZVs stay latent?
Dorsal root ganglion
Where does VZV appear?
After chickenpox, as shingles on skin along the infected neurone.
Which virus causes measles?
Paramyxoviruses- enveloped ss RNA helical symmetry
What does measles cause?
Virus spread before rash appears, pneumonia and mortality
Whats mumps caused by?
Paramyxovirus (enveloped ss RNA)
WHat does mumps cause?
Parotitis- infection of salivary glands, painful swelling
Males post puberty can happen in testes instead ouch.
Can cause meningitis
Which family is Rubella in?
Togaviridae
When does Rubella cause problems?
When pregnant woman contracts in 1st 16 weeks. Congenital rubella causes mental retardation, blindness etc.
What do adenoviruses cause?
types 1-7- respiratory disease (very common)
8 and 19- keratoconjunctivitus
11 and 21- haemorrhagic cystitis (serious)
What can adenoviruses be used for?
Benign ones can be used for gene therapy
What are papilloma viruses?
(ds DNA icosahedral). replicate in squamous epithelia- warts.
Some cause cancer. Vaccine given to 14 year old girls. Cervical one.
