Q

Role of DNA methylation

A

DNA methylation regulates gene expression and provides a possible mechanism for step-wise differentiation from a totipotent cell

Q

Describe mammallian DNA methylation

A

CpGs are unevenly distributed in mammalian genomes
• Majority of CpGs methylated – decrease correlated with
differentiation in specific cellular contexts
• Transcribed gene bodies are methylated and active enhancers are
unmethylated
• 97% of promoter CpG Islands (CGI) are unmethylated and methylated
CGIs are repressed
