The medical model is the disease itself - to be treated by medically curing the problem
The social model is that disability is created as a social problem- need to manipulate society to better suit deaf people.

What is the cultural model of deafness?

Those who use BLS as their first language see themselves as a community.
They do not see themselves as disabled, simply the same as any other minority who have a different language.

What are the main causes of deafness?

50% is genetic - Autosomal recessive genes run in family
Infection/Injury
Conductive malformations of the auditory tract

What are some problems with deaf people going to GP?

Answer 4

They found they did not want to go to the GP, this was because of doctors not looking at them when speaking, not writing things down and not recognising their patients couldn’t hear.

What are the dos and donts with a deaf person?

Dont shout, cover mouth or talk too fast
Do speak clearly at normal speed
Do talk face to face
Do gain attention by tapping, waving or stamping feet
