What is eugenics?
The application of biological principles to upgrade the physical and mental strength of the nation.
Which group of people were at the centre of the eugenics debate?
Disabled people
What did the old term idiot mean?
Someone who is unable to guard themselves against common physical dangers
What did the old term imbecile mean?
Someone who is incapable or being taught or managing their own affairs
What did the old term feeble-minded mean?
Someone who needs constant supervision for their own protection or the protection of others.
What is the tragedy charity model and why is it bad?
Depicts disabled people as helpless and victims. This helps raise money but is not good for patient empowerment.
What is the medical model of disability and what are its limitations?
It looks at the physical limitations of individual disabled people but is not good as this does not reflect how these people feel about themselves. It is also known as the functional-limitation model.
What are the three aspects of the WHOs definition of disability?
Impairment-loss of psychological, physiological or anatomical structure
Disability-Lack of ability to perform an activity
Handicap-Disadvantage for a given individual
What is the social model of disability?
Disability is a consequence of environment, social and attitudinal barriers and defines it as society’s problem.
It is a failure from society to meet the needs of the disabled.
What is the social adapted model of disability?
It recognises that not all problems of impairments can be currently addressed, but it we recognise our environment as discriminatory then we can do much to change it. Incorporates both social and medical models.
What is diagnostic overshadowing?
Diagnostic overshadowing refers to the negative bias impacting a clinician’s judgment regarding co-occurring disorders in individuals who have intellectual disabilities or other mental illness.
