L14: Rabbit Analgesia And Anesthesia (Heard) Flashcards
1
Q
- V-gel forms seal at glottis
- use V-gel w/ capnograph
A
:)
2
Q
Differences in small patients/rabbits**
A
- rapidly hypothermic (or hyperthermic)
- faster metabolism of drugs
- ventilation rate increases
- circulation time decreases
- faster to mask down with inhalant, and faster to recover
- large surface area to volume ratio
- move air rapidly over nasal turbinates which may interfere w/ auscultation
- resp. Dz. issues common
- can fx lumbar vertebrae easily when kick
- don’t need to NPO pre-op
3
Q
- 20% blood volume loss significant
- total blood volume ~ 10% of body weight
- fixed dilated pupil bad
A
:)
4
Q
Capnographs
A
- side stream capnograph can exceed minute ventilation of rabbits
- in stream can have a lot of dead space
- EMMA can be hard to read
5
Q
Catheter placement
A
- cephalic v. Preferred
- ear, jugular vein, saphenous v.
- IO catheters on tibia, femur, trochanteric fossa, proximal humerus
6
Q
Ketamine injected peripherally can cause phlebitis/vasculitis
A
:)
7
Q
Opioid use in rabbits
A
- buprenorphine lasts longer than morphine or hydro, but less analgesia (can give intranasal)
- bup variable effect transmucosal
- more likely to sympathetic response with opioids in rabbits
8
Q
Atropine and Glycopyrrolate use in rabbits
A
- some can metabolize atropine rapidly and others can’t
- can induce atropine toxicity if rabbit doesn’t have atropinase
- avoid antimuscarinics, but rec. to give glycopyrrolate if needed and only use atropine in an emergency
- atropine can also cause ileus
9
Q
Can do epidurals in rabbits (use same technique as in cats)
A
Morphine used primarily
10
Q
Acepromazine in rabbits
A
- can use low dose ace
- not for aggressive animals necessarily
- degree of tranquilization dependent on env. Animal in
- give IM, then wait 45-60 mins. Pre-op
11
Q
Induction of rabbits
A
- IM or IV injection
- Mask (not rec. w/o sedation)
- induction chamber
Sedation:
- midazolam + ketamine
- midazolam + bup or hydro
12
Q
Telazol in rabbits
A
- don’t use
- can wipe out kidneys, and doesn’t render rabbits immobile
13
Q
Propofol in rabbits
A
Can use if can directly intubate animal quickly
14
Q
- Rabbits obligate nasal breathers
- obstruction = common cause of morbidity/mortality
- use #1 laryngoscope
- use 3mm internal diameter tube for medium sized 3kg rabbit
- rabbits rarely regurge
A
:)
