L14 Control of Ventilation Flashcards
respiratory centres in brain stem
Pons RC
- Apneustic Area
- Pneumotaxic
Medulla RC
- DRG (dorsal resp group
- VRG (ventral resp group
Pre- Botzinger complex-
Explain what stimulates ramp signal
• Action potential in PBC stimulate DRG to activate : inspiratory ramp signal
what does ramp signal allow
- Gradual increase in lung volume
* Control rate of ventilation
what does the pneumotaxic + apneutic areas do
P= inhibitory signals to DRG= limits inspiratory ramp signal A= • Stimulatory signals to inspiratory area to prolong inspiration
what does the ventral respiratory group so
forced
• Contribute to expiration and inspiration (has both neurons)
how does central chemo receptors pick up H changes
- H in blood Cannot cross blood brain barrier
- But CO2 can // crosses barrier, combines with water= carbonic acid = HH inc > CC receptors > inc respiratory drive > vent inc
when are peripheral chemo receptors activated
Needs to drop substantially before stimulation of peripheral
steps of neg feedback of ventialtion
changes to PCO2, H O > chemo pick up > send to inspiratory group > hyperventilating > decrease CO2
2 voluntary controls of breathing
Hering-Breuer Inflation Reflex
= lung inflate= stretch = inhibit
Irritant Receptor Reflex
= irritation = excitatory responses
