L12 Thermodynamics Flashcards
What is the formula for work done?
Work = force x distance
What is the formula for kinetic energy?
1/2 mv^2
Mass - kg
Velocity - m/s
Ke - J
Define potential energy
Potential energy is stored energy that an object has due to its position or state
What happens to gravitational potential energy when you do work on an object by lifting it?
Height increases therefore using mgh, gravitational potential energy will increase
When an object i released at rest on a potential energy curve, where would it naturally move to?
It will naturally tend to move in the direction of lower potential energy
This is because systems tend to move towards lower energy states
What is the effect of Mg2+ binding to the ATP?
They stabilise the phosphate groups of ATP, making it more reactive. This stabilisation reduces the energy barrier for reactions involving ATP hydrolysis, thus accelerating the reaction rate
What does the peak in a potential energy curve mean?
Represents the energy barrier that must be overcome for the reaction to proceed
Do all collisions between a protein and a drug form a complex?
Successful collisions with the correct orientation and energy can lead to the formation of a protein-drug complex. Conversely, collisions with sufficient energy can disrupt these complexes, leadiing to dissociation
What is the second law of thermodynamics?
Total entropy of an isolated system always increases over time
Systems tend to move towards states of higher disorder or randomness
