L11 Flashcards
Does communication in teams make a difference in performance?
Not depending on time spent communicating with each other
The real difference is in outside boundary-spanning communication
Low and high performance team differ in time spent communication and discussing project with outside world - people not in core team
Performance curve in teams
First increased performance and then diminishing and then go down
The longer they work together, the worse performance
When people work a lot together the diversity reduces - selection and treatment effect
It can be very good for performance to have common values etc. but for innovation it is not good
Not invented hear syndrome: reject relevant ideas that do not come from yourself
How to prevent performance from going down in group
Break up teams
Defining and solving problems is social process
Include and keep diversity by changing teams
Gatekeeper - someone passionate that follows everything and works as bridge to outside world to bring in novelty
Cross functional team
Variety
Connect technology with market
Probability to end up in financial success is much higher
Have different focuses which is necessary
Why is communication important for innovation?
Need diversity to come up with something new
The longer work together in one team the worse performance -Not invented here syndrome
Need gatekeeper and connection with outside world for novelty
Matrix organization
Complexity which results in additional coordination costs and results is not good
As soon as adopt matrix everyone has two managers
Lack clear mandate
Too much meetings to discuss details
Pros and cons with project
-If people with same competence would instead sit together they would learn from each other and come up with new things
+Need integration between different parts to have market orientation
+Focus on final product, customer and integration
-Inefficient to split up people
Variables to guide choice of model
-Change in knowledge (if expert are together they create new knowledge otherwise they keep doing what they always done)
-Interdependency (integration between components)
High interdependency - project
High knowledge change - stay in departments
Long time of project - better to work on one technology and not together with others
