L10_The Axilla (2) Flashcards

1
Q

Tell me about the Supraclavicular Branches: Long Thoracic Nerve

A
  • Runs longitudinally along the lateral sides of the thoracic wall (right on top of the serratus anterior)
  • Branches off from the roots of the brachial plexus (C5-C7)
  • Provides innervation to the serratus anterior muscle Also: injury at the long thoracic nerve affects the patients ability to protract the scapula resulting in scapular winging or hyper-retraction of the scapula (C5, C6, C7- fly to heaven)

Q

Tell me about the Supraclavicular Branches: Suprascapular Nerve

A
  • Branches off from the superior trunk of the brachial plexus (C4-C6)
  • Provides innervation to the supraspinatus and infraspinatus muscle

It travels in the transverse ligaments of the scapula and joins with the dorsal scapular nerve
