L10_The Axilla (2) Flashcards
Tell me about the Supraclavicular Branches: Long Thoracic Nerve
- Runs longitudinally along the lateral sides of the thoracic wall (right on top of the serratus anterior)
- Branches off from the roots of the brachial plexus (C5-C7)
- Provides innervation to the serratus anterior muscle Also: injury at the long thoracic nerve affects the patients ability to protract the scapula resulting in scapular winging or hyper-retraction of the scapula (C5, C6, C7- fly to heaven)
Tell me about the Supraclavicular Branches: Suprascapular Nerve
- Branches off from the superior trunk of the brachial plexus (C4-C6)
- Provides innervation to the supraspinatus and infraspinatus muscle
It travels in the transverse ligaments of the scapula and joins with the dorsal scapular nerve
Tell me about the Supraclavicular Branches: Dorsal Scapular nerve
- Branches off from the roots of Brachial Plexus (C4-C5)
- Travels with dorsal scapular artery
- Provides innervation to Levator scapulae, Rhomboid major and minor
Tell me about the Supraclavicular Branches: Nerve to subclavius
- Branches off from the superior trunk of brachial plexus (C5-C6)
- Provides innervation to subclavius
Tell me about the Infraclavicular Branches: Medial and Lateral Pectoral nerves
Medial nerves (C8-T1):
- provides innervation to the pectoralis major and minor
Lateral nerves (C5-C7):
- provides innervation to the pectoralis major
Clavicular head of pect.major (C5-C6)
Sternal head of pect.major (C7-T1)
Tell me about the Infraclavicular branches: Upper and Lower Subscapular nerves
- C5-C6
- Provide innervation to the subscapularis muscle (lower and upper) and to the Teres major muscle (lower)
- They originate from the posterior cord
Tell me about the Infraclavicular Branches: Thoracodorsal nerve
- C6-C8
- Provides motor innervation to latissimus dorsi
- Branch from the posterior cord of the brachial plexus
Tell me about the Infraclavicular (terminal) branches: musculocutaneous nerve
- C5-C7
- the continuation of the lateral cord and the superior trunk
- provides motor and sensory innervation to anterior compartment of the arm
- Pierces coracobrachialis muscle
Tell me about the Infraclavicular (terminal) branches: ulnar nerve
- C7-T1
- Continuation of the medial cord and the inferior trunk
- Travels down medial side of the arm posterior to the medial epicondyle
- Provides motor innervation to anterior forearm and hand
Tell me about the Infraclavicular (terminal) branches: Median nerve
- C6-T1
- Travels down mid-line of the arm
- Provides motor innervation to anterior compartment of the forearm and hand
- The median nerve is composed of the lateral root (coming from the lateral cord) and the medial root (coming from the medial cord)
Tell me about the Infraclavicular (terminal) branches: Axillary nerve
- C5-C6
- Dips inferior to lateral scapular border and posterior to humerus
- Provides motor innervation to deltoid and teres minor muscles
- branch from the radial nerve
- Passes through the quadrangular space
Tell me about the Infraclavicular (terminal) branches: radial nerve
- C5-T1
- Travels posterior to humerus in radial groove and anterior to lateral epicondyle
- Provides innervation to the posterior compartment of arm and forearm
- Passes through the triangular interval
- The continuation of the posterior cord and middle trunk
