L10 - Nordic Light Flashcards
What does rising affluence lead to?
- Demand increases (people want exotic fruit all year round)
- People can also invest in alternative sources such as:
— LED Bulbs
— Nuclear Energy
— Renewables - This helps avoid fossil fuels
What do environmental concerns lead to?
- Greater Research
- Better communication about dangers of fossil fuels
- Global movement towards more sustainable energy
HOWEVER: - This could be motivated by political and power concerns
What does and increased education lead to?
- Increased awareness (from schools and programmes)
- Ecological and Carbon footprint make abstract ideas more understandable
- People feel more guilty about use of fossil fuels such as:
— Food Miles
— Car Emissions
— Gas and Electricity Use
SO: - People are more open to change (may buy local organic food)
What is the overall aim?
- Technological Solution are used to:
— Increase Energy Supply
— Decrease Energy Demand
If no action is taken,
our energy mix could have a catastrophic impact on climate change
What is the carbon footprint?
A measure of the amount of greenhouse gases generated:
- By the activities of an individual or organisation
- Or by a product over its lifetime
What is an ecological footprint?
A measure of how much land is needed to support an individual’s lifestyle
What factors are key in measuring carbon and ecological footprint?
- Food (How much meat eaten, food wastage)
- Home (Size and number of people in house)
- Travel (What kind of transport used)
- Lifestyle (What money is spent on)
What does Sweden hope to achieve by 2050?
Reduce net carbon emissions to 0
How has Sweden’s governance pushed sustainability?
- Carbon tax of 20%
- Dissuades people from consuming
- Subsidies offered for low-carbon vehicles
What type of graph is the Kuznet graph?
A bell curve:
- Income rises with environmental degradation
- and peaks at the industrial stage (aka Income Turning Point)
- Afterwards, as income rises
- environmental degradation decreases
What is decoupling?
The concept of being able to increase economic development
while being able to increase protection of environment (decrease environmental degradation)
What can good governance lead to?
- Decoupling
- Reinvesting money to reduce impact on environment (Kuznet Curve)
