L10/11 - Encryption and authentication Flashcards
What is Authentication?
The process of recognising the users identity
Give an example of Authentication
Passports, some have a microchip which is a new biometric product. It stores the users photograph and personal information. This improves the security at airports.
What does RFID stand for?
Stands for Radio Frequency Identification
Where is RFID used?
Used in Passports and Airports
Why is it better to use Biometrics?
It is more secure and cannot be forgotten unless the person changes their facial features. This is very hard to hack as everyone is very unique.
What is needed in two-factor authentication?
The user needs two pieces of information in order to be verified by the requestor
What are the three main pieces of information used in authentication?
- Something the user KNOWS (Password)
- Something the user HAS (Card)
- Something the user IS (Fingerprint)
What does PKI stand for?
Public Key Infrastructure
What is PKI?
Supports the identification of Public Encryption
Data Encryption translates data into another….
…form
What is a Private Key?
Used with an algorithm to encrypt and decrypt code
What is the information and messages referred to in Encryption?
Plaintext
What is used for anyone to encrypt messages?
Public Key
How are the messages encrypted?
Cipher-Text
What is Encryption?
Process of converting information into a form that can only be understood to people who have a ‘key’
Give an example of Encryption
An example is Single Key Encryption which is when:
- one person writes a message and uses the key to encrypt it.
- they send the encrypted message to the person they want to read it
- the person who has received the message will then use their own key to decrypt the message and read it so it can be understood easily
