Define compliance
Publicly conforming to the behaviour or views of others in a group but maintaining your own views in private / disagreeing with theirs
Define identification
Adopting values, attitude and behaviour of a group both publicly and privately
Fitting a social role but once leaving that role, could stop those beliefs
Define internalisation
When an individual changes their behaviour to fit in with a group publicly while also agreeing with them privately
What is Informational Social Influence?
When a person lacks knowledge and looks to the group for guidance and knowledge
This is common when a person is ambiguous (unclear) situation
This type commonly involves internalisation
What is Normative Social Influence?
When an individual conforms to group pressure to fit in or because they are scared of being rejected by the group
This type commonly involves compliance
Who proposed the 3 types of conformity?
Kelman (1958)
What is the difference between compliance and internalisation?
Compliance - agree in public but maintain own views in private
Internalisation - changes behaviour to fit in publicly but also agreeing in private
What did Shultz find?
Placed signs in hotel rooms stating 75% guests reused towels each day.
Towel use of those exposed to the sign fell by 75%

Advertised to adolescents that most people that age don’t smoke
Surveyed them and found adolescents were less likely to start smoking if they were told most of their peers didn’t smoke
