Define Schizophrenia
- A severe mental disorder characterised by disruption of cognitive and emotional functioning.
- It effects language, thoughts, emotions and sense of self.
- The person hears voices and sees visions
What are the two types of Schizophrenia?
Type I - Acute
Type II - Chronic
What is the difference between the types of schizophrenia?
Acute - Obvious positive symptoms appear stressful events
Chronic - Takes many years to form. There is gradual changes of increased disturbance and withdrawal characterised by negative symptoms

Describe the ICD
- Produced by the WHO
- Updated every few years
- Focuses on clusters of symptoms to classify a psychiatric illness
- Used in Europe
- Focuses on subtypes of schizophrenia

- Classification & description of 200 mental disorders (grouped by features)
- Produced in USA
- Updated every few years
- Used to have subtypes but removed
What is the first criteria for the DSM V?
2+ criteria must be present OR only 1 if delusions are bizarre or hallucinations consist of running commentary in person’s thoughts A) Delusions B) Hallucinations C) Disorganised speech D) Catatonic behaviour E) Negative symptoms e,g abolition
What is the second criteria for the DSM V?
Social or occupational dysfunction: since onset, 1+ areas of functioning will be negatively affected
What is the third criteria for the DSM V?
Duration:
- Continuous signs of disturbance for 6+ month
- Symptoms from first criteria for 1 month
- During non-active periods, disturbance is limited to negative symptoms only OR 2+ symptoms from the first criteria
