L1 - Content Analysis Flashcards
1
Q
What is content analysis?
A
- Method used to analyse qualitative data
- Takes qualitative data and turns it into quantitative data
- Technique can be used for data in different formats e.g interviews
- The researcher will need coding units e.g no of positive/negative words used
2
Q
What is the procedure for content analysis?
A
- Data is collected
- Researcher reads through/examines the data, familiarising themselves with it
- Researcher identifies coding units
- Data analysed with application of coding units
- Tally is made each time a coding unit appears
3
Q
What is Thematic Analysis?
A
- Method of analysing qualitative data that involves identifying and reporting patterns within the material
4
Q
If thematic analysis is used for an interview, what will the researcher need?
A
- A transcript of the interview
- Coding units to analyse the transcript
- Review the coding units for themes
5
Q
Evaluation (+)
A
- Reliable way to analyse qualitative data as coding units are NOT open to interpretation, so are applied the same way with different research
- Easy technique and not time consuming
- Allows statistical analysis as the result produces quantitative data
6
Q
Evaluation (-)
A
- Causality cannot be established as it only describes the data
- It only describes the data, it cannot provide explanations for the pattern
