L1 - Construction Technology - Frames Flashcards
What different types of frames are there?
Steel frame
Concrete frame
CLT frame
What are the advantages and disadvantages of steel frames?
Advantages
High tensile strength
Can span long distances without column support
Lighter so better for poor soil types
Quick to assemble
Disadvantages
Long lead in time
Requires additional fire stopping
Steel price fluctuates
Steel exposed to air and water may corrode
What is a typical rate for steel?
Standard steel member - £3-3.5k/tonne - £1500 for rebar
SHS - £8-9k/tonne
What are the advantages and disadvantages of concrete frames?
Advantages
Fire protection
Good sound and insulation
Easy to alter on site
Disadvantages
Slow construction
Heavier increasing foundation costs
Can crack due to shrinkage when live loads are applied
High embodied energy
What are steel frames made from?
Columns, beams, angles, connections
What are the additional extra over’s in a Cost Plan for steel frames?
