L1 Flashcards
What is the definition of IOT?
a global infrastructure for the information society by interconnecting things based on existing and evolving interoperable information and communication technologies
*iot is an umbrella term
What are some of the general types of IOT connections?
Computers
human to human
human to thing
thing to thing
What are some broad applications of IOT?
Smart agriculture
smart homes
smart payments
smart parkings
What enabled the development of IoT?
Bandwidth (for wireless communication) improved by more than 1000x
Cost of computing ICs has reduced
Explain the difference between physical and virtual things. How are they related?
Physical things exist in the physical world and are identified, connected, sense and/or actuate
Virtual things exist in the information world and can be associated with physical things
A physical thing may be represented in the information world via one or more virtual things
Describe the IOT sysem basic infrastructure
IoT edge: comprises a disparity of things that perform sensing, actuating, monitoring
IoT network
IoT gateway: does protocol translation
IoT back end: cloud platform – APIs – cloud applications
If you don’t have so much data and the latency is high, how should the IoT act?
You do not want to spend time on processing and want to prioritise sending the data.
How you treat data depends on latency, capacity, complextiy, etc.
What is an IoT device?
a device composed of one or more things (virtual or physical) that has the capability to communicate between devices
What are the types of communciation between IoT devices?
Directly (device to device)
Through the communication network via a gateway
Through the communication network without a gateway
Combinations of the above methods
What are the classes of IoT services?
Identity-related services: to identify real world objects in the virtual world
Information Aggregration Services: collect, packet, then send data
Collaborative-Aware Services: process data and makes decisions
Ubiquitous Services: aim to provide Collabortaive-aware services anytime to anyone anywhere
What are the primary characteristics of IoT systems?
Interconnectivity
heterogeneity
dynamic changes
scale and complexity
What are the basic requirements of IoT systems?
Identification-based connectivity: each thing has a unique identifier
Interoperability: for provision and consumption of diverse information and services
Security: typical threats towards confidentiality, authenticity and integrity
Privacy: privacy of owners and users
How does data go from the edge to the cloud (3 steps)
o Data: raw and (un)processed data from IoT devices
o Information: data is processed, classified, condensed and put in context
o Knowledge: Inferred from organizing and structuring information and is applied to achieve specific objectives
