KT3 - Personality Flashcards
Evaluation for Thomas, Chess and Birch
- longitudinal study causes attrition
- parents may lie to make their kids look better
- can’t be generalised because children were middle class
AMRC for Thomas, Chess & Birch
A:to discover if ways of responding to the environment remains throughout life
M:133 children’s behaviour was observed from infancy to adulthood. Parents were interviewed about their child’s routine and reaction to change
R:children had the same reactions to change throughout their life
C:the environmental responses remained therefore temperament is innate
AMRC for Farrington
A:to investigate whether behaviour in early life affects behaviour is later life
M:Farrington studied males aged 2-32 and interviewed their parents and teachers and looked at their criminal records if they had one.
R: a majority were convicted of at least one crime
C:behaviours in early life affect behaviours in later life. To reduce APD childhood problems must be tackled.
Evaluation for Farrington
- longitudinal study cause attrition
- parents could have lied to make kids look better
- not a controlled study and biological aspects weren’t investigated
Who did a case study about biological causes of APD?
Raine
Who did a case study about situational causes of APD?
Farrington
AMRC for Raine
A:to see if an abnormality in the prefrontal cortex causes APD
M:21 men with APD and 34 normal men had MRI scans
R:the APD group had an 11% reduction in the prefrontal grey tissue compared to the normal group
C:APD is caused by a reduced prefrontal cortex
Evaluation for Raine
- supports the idea that there are biological explanations for APD
- only males so can’t generalised
- all the participants were volunteers so it’s not representative of society
- brain is much more complex than this study suggests
Who did a case study about whether temperament was innate?
Buss and Plomin
AMRC for Buss and Plumin
A:to see whether temperament is innate
M:identical and non identical pairs of twins aged 5 were tested for emotionality, activity and sociability. Their scored were compared
R:the identical twins had closer scores than the non identical twins
C:temperament has genetic basis and is innate
Evaluation for Buss and Plomin
- identical twins spend more time together so are likely to have similar results
- all participants were twins and 5
- in lab setting so lack a ecological validity
