KSS 1D Flashcards
What are Extraneous Variables?
An extraneous variable is any variable that may affect the results other than the IV
Extraneous variables may arise from:
Participant expectations & differences
Experimenter bias
Situation/Context – such as inconsistencies in the experimental method
What are Errors in research?
Errors are the differences between the measured value and “true value” of what is being measured. (True value is the measurement we would obtain if our methodology was perfect).
What are Random errors?
Random errors are unpredictable and inconsistent variations in data that occur due to uncontrollable factors, such as participant differences or environmental changes. These errors occur randomly and can affect the accuracy of results.
what are Systematic errors?
Systematic errors are consistent, predictable mistakes that occur due to flaws in the research design, equipment, or measurement methods.
what are personal errors?
Personal errors are mistakes and miscalculations when conducting research
what are Confounding Variables?
A confounding variable is any variable (other than the IV) that has had an unwanted effect on the DV.
A confounding variable differs from an extraneous variable in that it is observed after a study has been conducted. An extraneous variable has the potential to cause an effect on the DV and is therefore controlled for in the experimental design.
