KSS 1C Flashcards
what are populations?
The population is the group of people to whom the research directly applies
what are samples?
Because we can’t usually do a study that involves every member of a population of research interest, researchers will instead try to find a sample that is representative of the population.
what are the three sampling methods?
Convenience sampling
Random sampling
Stratified sampling
what is Convenience sampling ?
Convenience sampling involves selecting participants who are readily available to the researcher. It is less likely to provide findings that are representative of the population. If volunteers are used in a study, this is always convenience sampling.
what is Random sampling ?
Random sampling involves giving each member of a population (of research interest) an equal chance of participating in the study
what is Stratified sampling ?
Stratified sampling is used when a study seeks to represent particular groups in the same proportion as a population. The population is divided into distinct groups (strata) and then the sample is drawn from each stratum
what is Participant allocation?
The process of assigning participants from the sample into experimental groups is called allocation.
what is the control group?
The control group is not exposed to the IV and therefore provides a base-line comparison to validate the conclusions relating to the experimental group
what is the experimental group?
The experimental group is exposed to the IV, and is therefore the source of material relating to the experimenter’s hypothesis
