Kp Flashcards
What is a homogenous reaction?
All the reactants and products are in the same state
What is a homogenous system?
All reactants and products are in the same phase
What is the difference between a state and a phase? Give an example
They are very similar but with some exceptions- water and oil are both in liquid state but do are immiscible so are classed as a different phase
Define partial pressure
The contribution one gas makes towards the overall pressure
How do you calculate pp and mole fraction of x
pp= Mole fraction x Total pressure
mf of x= Moles of x/total number of moles
What should all moles fractions in a mixture add up to?
1
How do you write an expression of kp. Use x and ys in your answer
kp= [pX][pY]/[pN]
Features of the kp, what do its values suggest
If greater than 1 it means that the equilibrium is towards the right hand side so more products than reactants
If less than 1- equilibrium is towards the left and there are more reactants than products
If exactly 1 it means that equilibrium is in the middle so equal amounts of products and reactants
What conditions causes the value of kp to change
an change in temperature
