A

How did Kohlberg create his stages ?

A

-conducted a moral judgement interview- he used 9 hypothetical dilemmas (the heinz moral dilemma). They presented a conflict between two moral dilemmas - 84 boys aged 10,13 or 16. PPTs. had to discuss three dilemmas and had to answer 10 or more open ended questions.

Define level 1 (stages 1 and 2)

A

Pre conventional morality - Actions that result in punishment=bad, rewards= good.
stage 1- punishment obedience- You don’t do something because you will be punished.
stage 2- morality is based on meeting your own interests and getting what you want.

A

conventional morality - maintains the current social systems.
stage 3- interpersonal cooperation - you try to live up to the expectations of the people who are important to you.
stage 4 - moral behaviour is behaviour which fits in with social norms.

A

post conventional morality- define morality in terms of abstract moral principles that apply to all societies.
stage 5- the social contract orientation- laws are seen as flexible in certain situations
stage 6-universal ethical principle - developed your own set of principles that you follow above the laws.

A

-gender bias- Kohlberg’s theory is based on a morality of justice. Gilligan found that women tend to be more focused on relationship(caring)
