cognitive development theories and education Flashcards
Four main concepts of Piaget’s application to education ?
Readiness, educational programmes, motivation and logical thinking.
What is readiness and educational programmes ?
- readiness= activities must match children’s maturational age.
- educational programmes= programmes must match a child’s stage of development.
What is motivation and logical thinking ?
- motivation= the motivation to learn comes from the desire to resolve disequilibrium. A teachers task is to create a challenging environment, to accommodate new schemas.
- logical thinking needs to be taught through maths and science.
Evaluation
Readiness - Bryant + Trabasso believed that practice was more important then readiness. -> Danner and Day found that practice made no difference.
Sylva claims criticisms of piaget’s theory undermines its educational application.
What are the three main concepts of vygotsky’s application to education ?
collaborative learning, importance of MKO, scaffolding.
What is collaborative learning and MKO.
- collaborative learning= students at different levels work in small groups towards common goal.
- importance of more knowledgeable other= someone that has a better understanding of a particular area.
effects of scaffolding ?
- scaffolding offers assistance to learner when necessary.
- Provides motivation to move through the ZPD.
Evaluation
collaborative learning -> Gokhale who found that students that used collaborative learning performed better on a thinking test.
-Scaffolding -> Wood + Middleton found that successful scaffolding depends on contingent regulations - They watched mothers and children play.
IDA ?
Assume that the application can apply to all cultures this may not be the case.
-support= Stiger and perry - compared American and Asian schools and found that maths was better taught by group work in Asia.
