Knowlton and Reader Chapter 7 Flashcards
q
Why do journalists try to stay out of their own stories
objectivity and neutrality
what are the issues associated with beats
need to rotate so there isnt any bias however, some are complex and a reporter who has been on a beat for awhile has expertise and experience
What happened in case of Michael Dillon
amanda petock in lobby with grandparents -spent summer with mother and child sai dfather abused her
- kept amanda longer
- appealed before judge and judge did not support
- grabbed her and fled
- he had done most of negotiating
- said he was on kids side
learned three things
when moral right or wrong comes into conflict with journalistic right or wrong , i will base my actions on the former
-power of newspapers to serve as a court of last appeal
amandas story made me feel the full weight of of the resp. reporters assuming depicting those they write about (those who do not have PR on payroll are at mercy of journalists)
greater harm
would have been if paper lost credibility by not covering the story
