Universality vs. context specificity
Universality says all people develop in the same way no matter the culture.
Context specificity says development is influenced by the culture.

Children are inherently bad and must be taught to be good.

Children born as blank slates without good or bad tendencies and can be taught right vs wrong
Behavioral consistency
Children either behave in the same manner no matter what the situation Or setting Or they change their behavior depending on the setting depending on who is interacting by them.

Continuity
Development progresses at a steady rate and the effects of change are cumulative
discontinuity
development progresses in a stair step fashion and the effects of early development have no bearing on latter development.
Passivity
development is influenced by outside forces
Activity
development influenced by the child himself and how he responds to external forces
Critical period
the window of time when the child will be able to acquire new skills and behaviors
Sensitive period
flexible time period when a child will be receptive to learning new skills even if it is later than the norm.
