Use of force
Common law
The right to self defence is recognised in law.
This includes the right for a person to use force to protect themselves or another, prevent crime and to effect a lawful arrest.
The force used must be necessary and reasonable in the circumstance
If you have an honestly held belief that you or another are in imminent danger, you may use such force as is reasonable and necessary to avert that danger

Where any provision of this act
(A) confers a power on a constable; and
(B) does not provide that the power may only be exercised with the consent of some person other than a police officer
The officer may use reasonable force, if necessary, in the exercise of the power

A person may use such force as is reasonable in the circumstances in the prevention of crime, or in effecting or assisting in the lawful arrest of offenders or suspected offenders or of persons unlawfully at large

Any incident where the effectiveness of the police response is likely to have a significant impact of the victim, their family or the community

Tactical firearms commander. Develops and commands how the objectives are to be reached

Operational firearms commander. Commands a group of officers to carry out a tactical and strategic plans

Creates the offence of possession of a firearm or ammunition with intent to endanger life

Creates an offence of possessing a firearm or imitation firearm with intent to cause others to fear unlawful violence being used against them
S.47(3) Firearms Act 1968
If a constable has reasonable cause to suspect a person of having a firearm with him, he may search that person and detain him for the purposes of doing so

If a constable has reasonable cause to suspect that there is a firearm in a vehicle in public he may search that vehicle and for that purpose require the person driving or in control to stop it
