knowledge Flashcards
saprobiotic nutrition
obtaining nutrients from dead organic matter or animals using extracellular digestion
mycorrhizae
when fungi form symbiotic relationships with the roots of plants
how do fungi help plants?
fungi are made of long thin strands called hyphae which connect to the roots of plants and greatly increase the surface area for plants to absorb ions (phosphorus) and water. in turn the plants provides the fungi with organic compounds (glucose)
what precaution should you take involving experiments with bacteria or yeast?
stir solvent to make sure they are evenly distributed
name a difference between prokaryotic and eukaryotic DNA
eukaryotic dna contains introns and prokaryotic doesn’t also prokaryotic dna is circular and eukaryotic dna is linear
explain advantages of lipid droplet and micelle formation
droplets increase surface area for enzyme action
so faster hydrolysis of lipids
micelles carry fatty acids and glycerol through the memebrane
what is a gene pool
the amount of different alleles within a population
what is a population?
a group of organisms of the same species living in the same area at a particular time
what is a species
a group of similar organisms which can reproduce to make fertile offspring
what is succession?
succession is the process by which an ecosystem changes over time
Describe and explain how succession occurs
colonisation by pioneer species change in environment change in biodiversity less hostile environment organisms survive and reproduce Leads to change in allele frequency
what is meant by the genome?
all the DNA in a cell
what are xerophytes?
plants that are especially adapted for warm, dry or windy habitats where water loss is a problem
