mitosis and meiosis Flashcards
what happens in prophase?
chromosomes condense and centrioles start moving to opposite poles of the cell. also the nuclear envelope breaks down
what happens in metaphase?
chromsomes line up along the centre of the cell and join to spindle fibres
what happens in anaphase?
centromeres divide separating each pair of sister chromatids spindle fibres contract and the chromatids are pulled to opposite ends of cell by their centromere making them v shaped
what happens in telophase?
chromosomes uncoil and become long and thin. they are now called chromosomes again and nuclear envelope forms around them then cytokinesis happens
what happens in interphase?
three parts, gap phase 1, synthesis and gap phase 2
- gap phase 1: cell grow and new organelles and proteins are made
- synthesis: DNA is unravelled and replicated ready to divide by mitosis
- gap phase 2: cell keeps growing and proteins needed for cell division are made
what are sister chromatids?
two identical copies of the same chromosome formed by DNA replication
