gene technologies Flashcards
what is a palindrome sequence?
sequences consisting of antiparallel base pairs
what does reverse transcriptase do?
makes DNA from RNA. the DNA produced in making DNA fragments from mRNA is called cDNA
what do restriction endonucleases do?
enzymes that recognize specific palindromic sequences and cut the DNA at these places
give 3 examples of mutagenic agents
- ACTING AS A BASE-chemicals called base analogs can substitute for a base during DNA replication
- ALTERING BASES-some chemicals can delete or alter bases
- CHANGING THE STRUCTURE OF DNA-some types of radiation can change the structure of DNA which causes problems during DNA replication
what are the two types of gene that control the rate of cell division?
- tumor suppressor gene
- proto-oncogenes
name the two types of gene therapies and the techniques used to perform them
gene replacement-somatic cell therapy
gene supplementation-gene line therapy
what is a vector?
a vector is something that is used to transfer DNA into a cell
what is the role of DNA ligase?
DNA ligase joins the sticky ends of the DNA fragments to the sticky ends of the vector DNA
