Knots Bends and Hitches Flashcards
A knot, according to a Seaman’s use of the term, is…
Usually a line bent to itself
To be a good knot it must: (3)
A) Hold fast w/o slipping B) Easy to tie C) Easy to untie
Square knot (3)
- It will not slip, but can jam under heavy strain
- Tie right over left, left over right
- Known as the “Reef knot.”
Bowline Knot (3)
A) Temporary eye in the bitter end of a line B) It neither slips nor does it jam under tension, yet it is easily untied C) Known as the “King of Knots.”
Bowline on a Bight (2)
A) Gives two loops instead of one, neither of which slips. B) It is used to hoist a person, chair-seat fashion, out of a lifeboat or hold
French Bowline (2)
A) It gives you 2 loops that can be adjusted to fit. B) You can transport an unconscious crew member safely in a properly secured bowline if you take care not to allow the part under the arms to catch on any projections.
Clove Hitch
A) The beat all-around knot for bending to a ring, spar, or anything else that is round ir nearly round. B) Will not jam and seldom pulls out.
Barrel Hitch (2)
A) To hoist almost any bulky object B) particularly useful in hoisting barrels, drums, and boxes without tops.
Rolling Hitch (2)
-Can be used for passing a stopper on a boat fall or mooring line when you are shifting the fall or line from the winch or capstan to a clear or bitts. -It also may be used to secure a taut line back on itself. If properly tied, it will hold.
Round Turn with 2 half hitches (2)
- The combination of a round turn with two half hitched May be used in a ring, in a pad eye, or on a spar. - It is particularly useful in a spar because it grips tightly and holds its position.
Beckett Bend (3)
-Also known as the “sheet bend” -Good for bending together 2 lines of two different sizes -If different sizes, the larger line is bent back to form bight and the smaller line forms the bend
Carrick Bend (3)
-It provides a very secure means of fasting two hawsers together -When drawn taut, it assumes a form that can be passed around a barrel or winch. -The ends should be seized down in their standing parts for security.
